Emphasizes Beauty Through the Use of Color

Multi-discipline Forecast Provides Global Color Direction across Fashion, Cosmetics, Home Furnishings, Graphics and Industrial Design Industries

CARLSTADT, N.J., November 2, 2009 – Pantone LLC, an X-Rite company (NASDAQ: XRIT), and the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, today announced the release of the summer 2011 edition of the PANTONE® VIEW Colour Planner, its cross-discipline color forecasting tool, titled “Symmetry.”

Symmetry explores the idea that by creating products in simple basic shapes, we can emphasize beauty through the use of color. The season’s vibrant palette represents the colors of a future where we need to strive for perfect harmonies, get away from the flat, boring and obvious, and minimize decoration to heighten sophistication. Symmetry focuses on the need for proportions that are well balanced and in perfect harmony. Man built environments to express the glory of faith, power, love and taste. Symmetries were crafted to emphasize and define them.

PANTONE VIEW Colour Planner Summer 2011 showcases seven palettes for use in women’s wear, menswear, active wear, cosmetics, home furnishings, industrial design and graphics:

  • Sublime form is a new floral still life. Plucked from their natural surroundings, specimens are positioned into a new palette. Fully saturated brights lie alongside their tertiary neighbor. This high-energy portrait concentrates our gaze to admire the beauty of their form and wonder at their confidence of hue: profuse, intense and luminous; amplified color that astonishes.
  • Programmed, a palette of balanced pales, evokes both antiquity and the sweetness of newborn beauty, raw or technical, imperfect or perfect: Fragility is counterpoint to durability, hardness is counterpoint to impermanence. Tones can take shape in weighty, matte and textured material visions or in smooth, perfect, opaque or translucent surfaces. It is a journey between the material and the immaterial, the real and the unreal.
  • Branching has the most natural searching quality. Lines and other shapes are permitted complete freedom to roam around in space. Thread, string, wire or fibers traverse areas like outstretched limbs with fingers stretching endlessly. The colors are muted, understated and natural. With age, colors get heavier, possibly more opaque, soupy or layered.
  • In Balance, our love of gold is balanced by our need for something more sober like the natural tones of clays and ceramics. We love the full impact monochromes of fuchsias and glazed reds, but need the appeasing qualities of warm skin tones. With Balance comes poise, order and symmetry.
  • Focus is the way-finding system of color. It rests on monochrome grays with flashes of light like the evening sun on a windy day – each flash a revelation and a brighter color. The color is the main point, like a beacon or siren. Adventurous processes are used to vary surfaces and create new textures and consistencies. Focus is unsettling but intriguing, and once noticed, generally sought after.
  • Division is a range of six fundamental dark colors that branch into simple and provocative fruiting bodies. Decorative inkblot abstractions mix near-blacks in patterns that play with the strong physicality of mirrored symmetry. The essence of this distilled palette is expressed through structures and silhouettes that will be made with artistry, taste and knowledge, motivating a whole new breed of design based on classic symmetrical principles where forgotten skills are revealed in the details.
  • In Complementary, a chromatic concept, color is used to achieve balance and symmetry. Bright colors are modulated so they pacify rather than impact or stand out, by coordinating them with black, white or tertiary and neutral colors. Playing with the temperature of color also achieves a sense of tepidness in the union of two bright and luminous colors.

Published bi-annually, 18-24 months ahead of the season, the PANTONE VIEW Colour Planner is based on the PANTONE FASHION + HOME Color System, the most widely used and recognized color standard in the world. It is produced by a team of leading visionaries from all over the world with expertise in different disciplines, providing a comprehensive color forecasting service for multiple design areas, including men’s and women’s apparel, beauty, home furnishings, lifestyle, graphic and industrial design.

Within each of the season’s most directional color palettes, a general introduction outlines the colors included and the philosophy behind them. Inspirational photos provide a visual form of the lifestyle concept from which the color story was developed. In addition, a specific breakdown of each palette covers harmonies, suggested color combinations and proportions, and suitable patterns and fabrics according to end use. Individual color swatch cards for all 71 colors are also included. A poster-sized overview of the season featuring all seven color palettes and their suggested end uses completes the product.
